Alexandre Calder (1898-1973) - Sandy's Birthday 80. 1973. Original lithograph in colours on Japon nacré paper. Signed in pencil lower right. 56x43cm. This lithograph came from the ink merchant Helna who supplied Mourlot and other printers. It is therefore probably a test print for the colour rendering, given by the artist or the printer. This work was created by Calder to celebrate his own birthday (his nickname being "Sandy"). It features all his visual lexicon: organic and geometric forms that seem to float, recalling the movement of his famous mobiles. The composition strikes a dynamic balance between flat areas of intense primary colours (red, yellow, blue) and graphic black lines, and the use of pearlescent vellum is particularly remarkable here. Unlike traditional vellum, this paper has an iridescent sheen that gives a unique depth of light to the colours, making them more vibrant.
