Description
Andrew Shunney (1916-1979) - Composition with flowers (Project for the "Retrospective Exhibition"). Original colour lithograph on wove paper, presented under Marie-Louise. Signed in the plate. Handwritten "Bon à Tirer" (BAT) in pencil on the Marie-Louise. Condition A, perfect state of preservation. This print is of exceptional historical importance as it is the final prototype approved by the artist for the poster of his retrospective exhibition at the James Hunt Barker Galleries. A native of Rhode Island and a pupil of the École de Paris, Shunney's characteristic style is evident here: a vibrant still life in which the material seems sculpted by light, recalling his mastery of the knife technique successfully transposed to lithographic art. The "Bon à Tirer" is a unique piece in the creative process, marking the painter's final approval before production begins. The fact that it appears on the vintage Marie-Louise, along with the signature on the plate, makes it a valuable working document for collectors of this artist, who was one of the few Americans to make his mark on the post-war Parisian art scene.
