Description
Georges Braque (1882-1963) - Marine with a Seagull. Original lithograph in colours on wove paper, 31 x 40 cm. From the famous portfolio "Varengeville", published by Maeght in 1955. Condition A, perfect state of conservation. This plate illustrates the period when Braque, living in his house in Normandy, devoted himself to the study of coastal landscapes and seascapes. The work is characterised by a remarkable economy of means and evocative power: the flight of the seagull, reduced to a black and white line of force, flies over a synthetic landscape where the land, sea and sky come together in broad, textured flat tints. Here the artist manages to capture the very essence of movement and space, characteristic of his research into the structure and poetry of nature. The quality of the lithographic printing, supervised by the Mourlot studio, perfectly captures the richness of the greys, blues and earthy browns characteristic of the master's Norman palette. As part of the "Varengeville" portfolio, this piece is a precious testimony to Braque's graphic elegance, combining contemplative serenity and plastic rigour. trial print, traces of printing on the back.
