Description
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) d'après- Danseuse créole, 1950. Lithograph after the original cut-out gouache, 102 x 67 cm (sheet) and 82.5 x 53.5 cm (plate). Condition A, a small tear in the lower margin ( 1cm). This monumental work is one of the most dynamic and colourful compositions of the artist's late life, produced during his revolutionary cut-paper period. The "Danseuse créole" embodies the apotheosis of Matissian synthesis, in which movement is suggested by an explosion of geometric and organic fragments floating in a vibrant space. The striking contrast between the primary colours and the cut-out shapes expresses a joie de vivre and pure rhythmic energy, transforming the silhouette of the dancer into an icon of modern art. The exceptional format of the sheet, which remains in its original uncut dimensions, underlines the prestigious nature of this edition, which respects the imposing scale of the works from the Nice studio. This plate is a masterly testimony to Matisse's ability to "draw directly in colour", offering a visual presence that is both monumental and absolutely light. This same visual was used for the "Nice" poster in 1965.
