Description
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) - The Eye. Original drypoint etching on wove paper, plate size 26.5 x 20.5 cm, sheet size 50.3 x 38 cm. Signed in pencil by the artist lower right. Condition A, perfect state of preservation. This work is a striking illustration of Dalin's obsession with vision and perception, the central themes of his paranoiac-critical method. Using the demanding technique of drypoint, Dali deploys surgical precision to engrave this eye, a symbol of clairvoyance and surveillance, which seems to scrutinise the viewer with unsettling intensity. The line, both nervous and extremely fine, creates a play of shadows and textures that give the image an organic, surreal depth. The use of wide margins on this 50.3 cm sheet highlights the graphic power of the subject, isolated in a white space that accentuates its dreamlike appearance. The drypoint, with the burrs it leaves on the metal, produces those distinctive velvety blacks that give the eye an almost living vibration. This piece, signed by the Catalan master, testifies to his technical virtuosity in the art of engraving, where he manages to condense all his personal mythology into an image of absolute visual effectiveness. It's an emblematic work that combines classical mastery with modern fantasy.
