Description
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) - Couple with two bouquets. 1977. Original lithograph in colours on Arches wove paper. The plate 37,5 x 29 cm ; The sheet 60 x 49 cm. Signed in pencil by the artist lower right with a note in pen "exhibition", probably by the artist as well. Condition A, perfect state of conservation. This is probably a test print of the colours as it was intended for the ink dealer. Catalogue raisonné reference: Mourlot no. 910. This 1977 work is a radiant celebration of the fundamental themes of the Chagallian universe: love, nature and colour. The couple, a central and eternal motif for the artist, is here surrounded by two luxuriant bouquets that seem to spring from the composition in an explosion of vibrant hues. Chagall used lithographic stone with a painter's freedom, superimposing layers of colour to create an atmosphere of dream and absolute tenderness. The artist's handwritten signature attests to the importance of this print run, produced on the presses of the Mourlot printing works, the historic studio where Chagall produced his greatest graphic masterpieces. The contrast between the chromatic density of the bouquets and the softness of the couple testifies to the artist's technical maturity at this period of his life. With its wide original margins, this plate offers a perfect balance between the power of the subject and the elegance of the support. It is a prestigious collector's item, emblematic of the visual poetry that made Marc Chagall one of the greatest masters of twentieth-century art.
