This festival took place at Temple University in Ambler, Pennsylvania, and featured renowned artists such as the Steve Miller Band, Crosby & Nash and Harry Chapin. Milton Glaser, born in New York on 26 June 1929 and died in the same city on 26 June 2020, was a renowned American graphic designer and typographer. He had a profound impact on the visual identity of American popular culture during the 1960s and 1970s. Among his most famous works are the design of the "I ❤ NY" logo (I Love New York, depicting a red heart on a white background) and the cover of the Bob Dylan compilation album, which features a stylised portrait of the singer adorned with psychedelically patterned hair. A native of the Bronx in New York, Milton Glaser came from a Jewish family of Hungarian origin, including his parents Eugene Glaser and Eleanor Glaser (née Bergman). He began his artistic training at the Cooper Union Art School from 1948 to 1951, before receiving a scholarship to study etching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna under Giorgio Morandi from 1952 to 1953. In 1955, together with Seymour Chwast and Edward Sorel, he founded Push Pin Studios in New York. The studio's distinctive style, characterised by a bold graphic approach and the use of typefaces inspired by the Renaissance, the Victorian era and Art Nouveau, captured the imagination of people around the world, offering an alternative to the then-dominant international style. During his time at Push Pin, Glaser designed the hugely popular Bob Dylan best-of poster in 1967. At the time, his work was inspired by Islamic miniatures and the psychedelic imagery emerging from the West Coast. It was from a photograph of a striking billboard taken in Mexico that he created the Baby Teeth typeface, used on the poster featuring Dylan's black silhouette. In 1968, Glaser extended his influence by co-founding New York Magazine, a publication dedicated to art and culture, with Clayton Felker. He died in New York on 26 June 2020, his 91st birthday. In addition to his work as a poster artist, Milton Glaser developed numerous visual identity systems. In 1977, he created the "I ❤ NY" logo to promote the city and state of New York. This logo, one of the most widely circulated and imitated in the world, has become an iconic part of the American landscape. Glaser said he was inspired by the famous LOVE sculpture by artist Robert Indiana, whose work appeared on millions of stamps in circulation in the United States at the time. He is also the author of several other major projects, including: the graphic design and decoration programmes for the restaurants at the World Trade Center in New York; the complete redesign of the Grand Union supermarket chain (including architecture, interior design, packaging and advertising); the design of an international symbol for AIDS for the World Health Organisation; and the logo for Tony Kushner's first Pulitzer Prize-winning play 'Angels in America'. Milton Glaser has also created numerous typefaces, including Baby Teeth, Glaser Stencil, Filmsense, Baby Fat, Coochie Nando NF, F37 Glaser Stencil, Big Kitchen, Einstein, Hologram Shadow, Aint Baroque NF, Glaser Houdini and Sesame Place.
