Description
Milton Glaser (1929-2020) - Law. 1987. 91x61cm. Original offset printed poster. Not backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. This poster was designed for the American Bar Association on the occasion of the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. The text at the top of the poster states the ABA's educational mission and its desire to inform the public about the importance of the law and democratic principles. It reads, in part: AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION / INFORMING THE PUBLIC THROUGH EDUCATION / IN COMMEMORATION OF THE BICENTENNIAL OF THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION". At the bottom, the title of the work takes up three fundamental values of the law: L A W / Equality Liberty Justice. The composition features elements inspired by classical legal architecture, such as stylised Roman columns that evoke the Western legal tradition and Roman law. The representation of justice is conceptual and graphic, in keeping with Glaser's approach, which favours symbolic clarity over literal reproduction. The designer also often plays on the typographic hierarchy: the typography is integrated into the image to reinforce the values expressed (equality, freedom, justice), rather than being a simple caption. This method is typical of his graphic style. Glaser does not use a narrative image but a clear visual metaphor (column of justice / law, textual values) to convey a strong message. The poster Law (or Law. Equality, Liberty, Justice) created by Milton Glaser in 1987 is a work of graphic design that is both symbolic and civic, created to commemorate the bicentenary of the American Constitution through the fundamental values of law.
