Description
Milton Glaser (1929-2020) - Poppy gives thanks, Poppy's Christmas. 1968. 91x61cm. Original poster printed in Zincography. Not backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. The poster was created to promote a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York featuring artists associated with the Poppy Records label, such as Townes Van Zandt, The Mandrake Memorial and Dick Gregory, on Thanksgiving Eve. The visual takes up the poppy motif, an image already promoted by Glaser for the Poppy Records label, with a surreal interpretation that plays on the musical and festive association around Thanksgiving. Glaser continues the visual motif of the poppy that he designed for the Poppy brand, a symbol of vitality, music and a break with institutional visual codes. The image features an 'anthropomorphised' poppy or a graphic element reminiscent of Thanksgiving (often a turkey in bloom), in a style that is both surreal and playful. The typography, probably a variation on Futura or a typeface designed by Glaser ("Neo-Futura"), is integrated into the visual whole in an expressive way, characteristic of his graphic approach at the time. The aesthetic of this poster is representative of the music and cultural posters of the 1960s, where the combination of zany images, symbolic elements and bright colours is used to communicate the energy and spirit of an event or cultural movement. Poppy Records was an independent music label that Glaser had helped to define visually, in particular with the image of the bright poppy that symbolised the label's unconventional and free spirit. The Poppy Gives Thanks poster thus promotes both a musical event and Glaser's vision of graphic design as a tool for cultural communication, as he saw design not just as an aesthetic, but as an expression of social and artistic experience. It illustrates Glaser's surreal, colourful and symbolic style during the 1960s, expressively blending image and typography.Milton Glaser is one of the most famous American graphic designers of the XXᵉ century.
