Description
Pierre Étaix (1928-2016) - The Films of Buster Keaton. 1968. Printed in the United States. 112x76cm. Original poster printed in offset and silkscreen. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. The Films of Buster Keaton poster was produced to promote a festival of Buster Keaton's films at the National Film Theatre in London, in keeping with Étaix's deep admiration for Keaton, one of the great masters of silent burlesque cinema who strongly influenced his own work as a filmmaker and artist. The visual adopts Étaix's characteristic graphic style, combining simple drawing, humour and cartoon spirit, while highlighting Keaton's recognisable silhouette. With this poster, Étaix pays tribute to the visual comedy of silent cinema and establishes a link between this American tradition and his own artistic universe.Pierre Etaix is a versatile French artist: filmmaker, cartoonist, clown and poster artist. Influenced by silent comedy films, he is part of the slapstick tradition, following in the footsteps of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. After working with Jacques Tati on Mon Oncle, he went on to make several landmark films, including Le Soupirant and Yoyo. In 1963, his short film Heureux Anniversaire won the Oscar for best short film. Fascinated by the circus, he founded the École nationale du cirque with Annie Fratellini in 1973 and pursued a career combining cinema, show business and drawing.
