Description
Paul Davis (1938-2008) - Henry V , Delacorte Theatre in Central Park , New-York. 1976. 114x74cm. Original offset printed poster. Not backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. Paul Davis' Henry V poster is an emblematic example of 1970s theatrical graphic design, created for the production of Shakespeare's play presented at the Delacorte Theatre in the heart of New York's Central Park. Davis translated the spirit of the historical tragedy visually, combining a strong image with a refined graphic composition. Shakespeare's play, centred on the themes of courage, leadership and war, finds in the poster an expressive evocation that captures both the dramatic power of the text and the emotional intensity of the staging. From the 1960s onwards, Paul Davis became one of the most influential American illustrators in the fields of cultural posters, editorial illustrations and political and social posters. He worked for a number of American newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Time and The Atlantic. He also designed posters for theatre, cinema and social and political causes. Paul Davis is considered one of the great American illustrators of the second half of the XXᵉ century. His work can be found in the collections of several institutions, including: Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Modern Art. Davis contributed to restoring an important place for illustration in the press and poster at a time when photography increasingly dominated.
