Description
Paul Davis (1938-2008) - Together with McGovern. 1972. Printed in the United States. 114.4x76cm. Original offset printed poster. Not backed. Condition A-, very small loss in two corners.
A political poster reminiscent of Mount Rushmore, produced to support George McGovern's presidential campaign in the United States, during which the Democratic candidate George McGovern opposed the Republican incumbent Richard Nixon, who was re-elected with a landslide victory. Despite the enthusiasm of his supporters and a progressive programme for peace and social justice, McGovern suffered a crushing defeat, winning only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. Nixon, on the strength of his image as an experienced president and his bold foreign policy (openness towards China, détente with the USSR), crushed his opponent with 520 of the 538 electoral votes. However, this presidential term was also marked by the Watergate scandal, discovered after the re-election, which led to the first and only resignation of an American president in 1974, causing a lasting upheaval in the political life of the United States and public confidence in the White House. The poster sought to visually mobilise voters around McGovern's progressive ideas, including an end to the Vietnam War, social equality and civic engagement. Paul Davis' expressive style and bright colours capture the energy and optimism of the campaign, while the typography highlights the candidate's name for immediate readability and maximum impact. Paul Davis, born in 1938 and died in 2008, was one of the most influential American illustrators of the second half of the XXᵉ century. Trained as an illustrator and graphic designer, he became famous for his cultural, political and social posters. His work is characterised by strong graphic compositions, expressive use of colour and an ability to visually translate clear messages, whether about art, theatre or political causes. His work can be found in the collections of several institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian Institution. From the 1960s onwards, Paul Davis became one of the most influential American illustrators in the fields of cultural posters, editorial illustration and political and social posters. He worked for numerous American newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Time and The Atlantic, and also produced posters for the theatre, cinema and social and political causes. Politics, history, U.S.A..
