Description
Paul Davis (1938-2008) - Shakespeare, Measure for Measure, Delacorte theatre in Central Park. 1976. Printed in the United States. 116,5x76cm. ( Portrait of Meryl Streep). Original offset printed poster. Not backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. This production was part of the Delacorte Theater's summer programme, offering free performances open to the public and democratising theatre and access to classical works. Shakespeare's play deals with issues of justice, power and morality, and the 1976 staging underlined these themes with relevance to the social context of New York. The production is also notable for featuring the young actress Meryl Streep, then at the start of her career, in one of her first major stage roles. Paul Davis's poster reflects this cultural and social dimension: with its modern graphics, bright colours and integrated typography, it captures attention and visually conveys the energy and accessibility of the event. The stylised forms pay homage to the classic text while speaking to New York's urban audience. Paul Davis, born in 1938 and died in 2008, was one of the most influential American illustrators of the second half of the XXᵉ century. Trained as an illustrator and graphic designer, he made a name for himself with his cultural, editorial, political and social posters. His style is characterised by bold compositions, expressive use of colour and an ability to translate complex events or ideas into striking images. His work can be found in the collections of several prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian Institution. The poster is a perfect illustration of the role of graphic design in cultural democratisation, making classic works accessible to the public and reflecting the universal social themes of the play.
