Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. This poster was produced by Bernard Buffet to promote a musical performance featuring Annabel Buffet, the French singer and wife of the painter. The venue was the legendary Olympia concert hall in Paris. The artist represented was born Annabel Schwob de Lure (10 May 1928 - 3 August 2005), known as Annabel then Annabel Buffet, a singer, writer and muse. Born into a middle-class family, Annabel's parents separated when she was very young, and she suffered a number of personal tragedies - her mother committed suicide when she was seven, and her father also died a few years later. After her secondary education in Cannes, Annabel went on to study drama at the Académie Julian in Paris and frequented the artistic milieu of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where she made friends with artists and intellectuals such as Françoise Sagan and Juliette Gréco. Annabel first came to prominence as a model, thanks to her lanky figure, before turning to singing and songwriting. She recorded her first single in 1957, with lyrics by Françoise Sagan. Her discography includes several albums and LPs, notably Aquarelle (1969), Annabel 71 (1971) and Annabel (1974), with songs and collaborations with composers such as Frédéric Botton and François Rauber. Annabel also wrote numerous novels and books throughout her life, including Comme tout le monde (1959), Les Bonnes Manieres (1961) and D'amour et d'eau fraîche (1986). Her writing is sometimes compared to that of Françoise Sagan. In June 1958, she met expressionist painter Bernard Buffet at a photo shoot in Saint-Tropez, and it was love at first sight. On 12 December 1958, they married in Ramatuelle and the couple adopted three children: Virginie (1962-2012), Danielle (born 1963) and Nicolas (born 1971). Annabel became Bernard Buffet's muse, playing a major role in his work and artistic life. In 1961, Buffet devoted an exhibition to her entitled Trente fois Annabel Schwob. Following Bernard Buffet's suicide in 1999, Annabel, deeply distraught, moved to the Yonne and continued her writing. She published Post-scriptum (2001), in which she recalls her experience of bereavement and her life with the painter. The composition of this poster is typical of Buffet's style: angular lines, strong contrasts and an expressive figuration that conveys both the intensity of the subject and the desired visual impact. The artist did not hesitate to apply his personal language to graphic works intended to promote shows, transforming the poster into an autonomous artistic object. Bernard Buffet, is one of the most recognised French painters of the XXᵉ century. Known for his dramatic expressionism and linear compositions, he also produced posters, engravings and graphic works that today feature in public and private collections. This poster bears witness to the intersection of personal life, graphic art and cultural promotion in 1970s Paris.
