Description
Anonymous (XX) - Ballet Nacional de Cuba - XXV Aniversario del Ballet Nacional de Cuba. 1974. Printed in Cuba. 103.5x73.5cm. Original poster printed in lithography. Not canvas-backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation.
Cuban poster produced in 1974 to celebrate the 25ᵉ anniversary of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, one of the most prestigious ballet companies in Latin America. Founded in 1948 in Havana by the famous dancer and choreographer Alicia Alonso, along with Fernando Alonso and Alberto Alonso, the company quickly established itself as a major institution in international classical ballet. This poster celebrates a quarter of a century of artistic activity for the troupe, which has played a key role in the development of classical dance in Cuba. After the 1959 revolution, the ballet received substantial support from the Cuban government, enabling the company to expand its activities, train new dancers and widely disseminate ballet to Cuban and international audiences. The Ballet Nacional de Cuba has distinguished itself with a style renowned for its technical virtuosity and dramatic intensity, as well as its remarkable interpretation of the great classical repertoire - notably Giselle, Don Quixote and Swan Lake. Under the direction of Alicia Alonso, an emblematic figure of ballet in the XXᵉ century, the company has also helped to train several generations of dancers who perform today on the great stages of the world. Cuban cultural posters from this period occupy an important place in the history of Latin American graphic design. Produced in the 1960s and 1970s to promote the country's artistic institutions and cultural events, they stand out for their graphic inventiveness, their bright colours and their ability to combine cultural communication and artistic creation. The poster for the XXV aniversario del Ballet Nacional de Cuba is part of this tradition. Designed to commemorate a key moment in the company's history, it bears witness to the international prestige acquired by the Cuban ballet during its first twenty-five years of existence and the central place it occupies in Cuba's cultural life.
