Description
Paul Davis (1938-2018) - Disraeli. 1979. 117x76cm. Original silkscreen and offset poster. Not interfaced. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation.
Theatre poster for the play Disraeli, a historical drama devoted to the life of the famous British statesman Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), who was twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the XIXᵉ century. The play dramatises the key political and diplomatic episodes of his career, including the manoeuvres that enabled him to secure Britain's strategic control of the Suez Canal, a major event in British imperial policy. Paul Davis was one of the great American illustrators of the second half of the XXᵉ century, particularly renowned for his theatre posters and editorial illustrations. His style is characterised by a great economy of means, expressive drawing and a remarkable ability to capture a character's personality through a stylised but immediately identifiable portrait. In the Disraeli poster, he highlights the charismatic figure and Victorian elegance of the politician, whose singular silhouette and physiognomy have become emblematic of British political history. Born in Missouri in 1938, Paul Davis studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York before becoming one of the most influential illustrators of his generation. He produced posters for Broadway and the New York Shakespeare Festival, as well as numerous illustrations for the press and publishing industry. His work helped to renew the American theatre poster of the 1960s and 1970s by introducing a graphic language that was modern, narrative and deeply rooted in the tradition of illustrated portraiture.
