Original poster produced to promote the play LILLIE, sponsored by Mobil. The play LILLIE follows the life of Lillie Langtry (1853-1929), a British actress and socialite famous for her beauty and her relationships with the aristocracy, notably the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII. It explores her success on stage, her love affairs and her influence in British high society. The 1978 Broadway production was supported by Mobil, which provided funding and promotion. The poster was designed by Ivan Chermayeff (1932-2017), a renowned American graphic designer and illustrator. Chermayeff co-founded the Chermayeff & Geismar studio, renowned for its iconic logos (NBC, Mobil, Pan Am) and its work in advertising, publishing and corporate visual communications. It has designed numerous posters for theatre, exhibitions and cultural events, combining legibility, visual impact and graphic modernism. Yvan Chermayeff, born in London in 1932, emigrated with his family to the United States in the 1940s. His creativity was strongly influenced by his father, the architect Serge Chermayeff, who hails from Chechnya. In 1957, after studying at Harvard University, the Chicago Institute of Design and Yale University, he co-founded the New York-based design-graphics firm Chermayeff Geismar with Tom Geismar.
