Description
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) - Lighthouse Footwear. 1979 . 114x76cm. Original poster printed in lithography and offset. Not backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation.
Original poster produced in 1979 for the promotion of the Lighthouse Footwear Reptile Shoes line, an advertising campaign commissioned from Andy Warhol, printed signature Warhol lower right. The poster was produced as part of Warhol's work as an advertising illustrator, a role he played from the 1950s onwards before becoming a major figure in Pop Art. Warhol began his career in New York as a commercial graphic artist, designing advertisements for fashion and women's footwear brands. The Lighthouse Footwear poster depicts a woman's shoe whose shape merges with that of an imaginary snake, half python half cobra, creating an image that is both surprising and memorable.
This visual metaphor plays on both the idea of the reptile - suggesting the material reptile or exotic leather - and the aesthetic form of the shoe, transforming the functional object into a provocative visual motif typical of Warhol. Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhol in Pittsburgh, is one of the most influential American artists of the XXᵉ century. After starting out as a commercial illustrator, he became famous in the 1960s for iconic works such as Campbell's Soup Cans and his celebrity portraits, exploring themes of consumerism, mechanical reproduction and popular culture. Alongside his pictorial work and experimental films, he continued to produce advertising posters and commissioned works that reflected his fascination with the integration of art and advertising. The Lighthouse Footwear poster illustrates this dual dimension of his work: a visual that is both promotional and artistic, where the act of advertising is transformed into an autonomous graphic work. It also bears witness to Warhol's interest in consumer objects and everyday icons, here transposed into a bold and singular visual language.
