Description
Edward Mason Eggleston (1882-1941) - Looking Deco, 1981. 73x49cm. Original lithographed poster. Not canvas-backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. This poster entitled Looking Deco was published in 1981 by the New York publisher Park South Presentations Ltd. It is not an original contemporary creation but a decorative lithoverite-printed reproduction of an earlier image by the American illustrator Edward Mason Eggleston. The image reproduced comes from a travel poster created in the 1930s for the Pennsylvania Railroad, designed to promote the seaside resort of Atlantic City and the tourist appeal of the Atlantic coast. This iconography corresponds to the aesthetic of Art Deco, a graphic and architectural style that dominated international visual culture between the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by stylised geometric forms, dynamic composition and an idealised representation of modernity and leisure. The publication of this reproduction in 1981 was part of the revival of interest in Art Deco that began in the 1970s and 1980s, when many publishers began reprinting historic posters for distribution as decorative and collectors' items. The Looking Deco poster measures approximately 19 × 29 inches (about 49 × 74 cm) and bears the publisher's seal of Park South, a company based on Broadway in New York that specialises in publishing reproductions of historical and decorative posters. The image recaptures the glamorous atmosphere associated with tourist posters of the inter-war period: elegant silhouettes, modernist architecture and a seaside atmosphere evoking the prosperity and leisure of the era. By reproducing this visual under the title Looking Deco, the publisher was highlighting the aesthetic of the Art Deco style itself, which by the early 1980s had become a graphic symbol of sophistication and nostalgia for the age of jazz and rail travel. This poster is thus a typical example of a modern reissue of a historic Art Deco visual, illustrating the way in which advertising images from the 1920s-1930s continued to circulate and be rediscovered in the visual culture of the late XXᵉ century.
