Description
René Vincent (1879-1936) after - Motobloc. Reprinted 1982. 72,5x53,5cm. Offset. Not canvas-backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation. This poster published in 1982 by Park South Presentations Ltd, a New York publisher specialising in the reproduction of historic posters, is a re-edition of a poster created in the early XXᵉ century by French poster artist René Vincent for the Motobloc car brand. The original poster dates from the 1910s, a period when the European car industry was developing rapidly and illustrated posters were becoming one of the main means of commercial promotion. The Motobloc company, founded in Bordeaux at the turn of the century, produced innovative cars for the time, in particular models built with a monobloc chassis - a technical innovation that inspired the very name of the brand. In the image designed by René Vincent, the automobile is depicted as a symbol of modernity, speed and elegance, recurring themes in early 20thᵉ century automobile posters. Vincent, who was one of the great French poster artists of the Belle Époque, is famous for his dynamic compositions featuring cars, cyclists or elegant female figures associated with the world of modern transport and leisure. A pupil of the illustrator Jules Chéret and active in the Paris poster scene, he took part in the boom in illustrated advertising that accompanied new transport industries such as the motor car and the bicycle. The 1982 reissue by Park South Presentations is part of a cultural phenomenon that began in the 1970s: the rediscovery of the great advertising posters of the Belle Époque and their reproduction for collectors and lovers of decorative art. These reproductions, printed in offset on paper, enabled the large-scale distribution of historic images that had become emblematic of the golden age of the illustrated poster. By reproducing the Motobloc poster, the publisher was thus highlighting the graphic aesthetics and imaginary world of car advertising at the beginning of the XXᵉ century, where the car was presented as the emblem of technical progress and the modern way of life.
