Description
César Baldaccini, known as César (1921-1998) - Untitled (Series of portraits of Mao Zedong). Original lithograph in colours on untrimmed wove paper, 74 x 56 cm. Signed in pencil by the artist lower right, annotated "E.A." (Épreuve d'Artiste). (Artist's Proof) lower left and enhanced with his characteristic fingerprint. Condition A, perfect state of preservation. This powerful work is part of a series of graphic investigations in which César hijacks the iconic imagery of the Chinese leader to confront it with his own artistic identity. The use of a fingerprint, a carnal signature inseparable from the sculptor's work, authenticates and physically marks the print, creating a dialogue between the historical figure and the artist's trace. The choice of vellum paper with untrimmed edges underlines the precious, artisanal character of this collaborative print, where the superimposition of inks and the texture of the lithographic stone reveal all the vigour of César's gesture.
