Description
Richard Mantell (XX) - The flamboyants of Thika. 1981. 91x61cm. Original offset printed poster. Not backed. Condition A+, perfect state of conservation.
Original offset printed poster created in 1981 to promote The Flame Trees of Thika, a very popular British TV mini-series broadcast on ITV in the UK and other international channels. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Elspeth Huxley (1959), the story is set in colonial Kenya at the beginning of the XXᵉ century and follows the lives of a European family as they confront the challenges, rugged beauty and human encounters of a country undergoing rapid transformation. The poster, designed by graphic artist Mantel, illustrates the evocative atmosphere of the series: it captures the light, warmth and spirit of the African landscape evoked in the story, visually conveying the poetry and emotion of this dramatic television adaptation. With its clear composition, sense of balance and inspired graphic treatment, the work creates an instantly recognisable image that invites the viewer into the world of the television story. Mantel left his mark on a number of posters published for cultural and pop-culture productions in the 1970s and 1980s, making a sensitive contribution to the visual language of television series of the period. The Flame Trees of Thika illustrates the importance given to graphic design for cultural and media communication at the dawn of the 1980s: the poster is no longer simply an advertising medium, but an attractive and memorable visual object that conveys emotion and storytelling. The whole thing is reminiscent of the famous film "Out of Africa".
