Havana morocco, triple gold thread on the covers, decorated ribbed spine, dent. inside, gilt edges. (HARDY). TCH. III, 806. Eighth original edition, second printing. The Acceptance Speech at the Académie française is published here for the first time together with the *Caractères* (published separately in 1693); it is accompanied by an apologetic preface. Contains 1,120 characters, including 46 new ones (Claudin), whilst three older ones have been expanded. Among the new ones: Cydias, Clitophon, Antagoras, Carro-Carri, etc. New remarks are indicated here by a handwritten note in the margin. This is the first complete edition of the *Caractères*; the ninth edition contained none of the new characters. Henri Monod’s bookplate on the front cover, with ex-libris belonging to Mortimer Schiff and Colonel Sickles.
