DYKE, Daniel – *La Sonde de la conscience*, by Daniel Dyke, formerly a minister of the Word of God. Translated from the English by Jean Vernueil. First French edition. Geneva, Charenton, Samuel Petit, 1634. In-12, (18) ff., 753 pp., title page yellowed, soft vellum, cord binding. HAAG IX, 470. Et. Jouy, *Bulletin du Bibliophile*, 1909, pp. 433–446. First French edition of a work first published in London in 1614. Its author was a Puritan minister who, as a result of persecution, was forced to abandon his ministry and retire to St Albans, where he gained a great reputation as a preacher. Jean Verneuil, born in Bordeaux in 1585, had taken refuge in England for religious reasons and served as assistant librarian at Oxford. La Rochefoucauld drew heavily on this work when composing his *Maxims*. The central theme, the guiding principle, is the same in Dyke and in La Rochefoucauld. It is the study of fallen man, of man dominated by self-love, by self-interest, or rather by what he regards as his own interest.
