Description
DU VERDIER, Gilbert Saulnier, Sieur – *Les Esclaves ou l'Histoire de Perse*. Paris, Thomas Le Roy, 1628. In-8, (4) folios, 634 pp., paper slightly yellowed, a few water-stains at the corners, supple vellum cover, traces of cord. LEVER 154. First edition dedicated to Henri de Lorraine, Count of Harcourt. Little is known about Du Verdier. He was historiographer to France; his numerous works led him straight to the hospital: around the year 1676 he secured a place for himself and his wife at the Salpêtrière, where he died in 1686. This champion of chivalry is best known for *Le Chevalier Hypocondriaque* (1632), inspired by *Don Quixote*. He is the last representative of a genre soon to fall into disuse, but his work has the merit of cataloguing all the clichés of the chivalric novel. (Lever, p. 40).
