Description
LA FAYETTE, Madame de, or SANDRAS DE COURTILZ – Memoirs of Holland. Based on the copy printed in Paris by Estienne Michallet (Hollande), 1678. Small 12mo, (2) folios, 211 pp., printed in small character; title page almost entirely stained; a few small light stains inside; midnight blue morocco binding, crowned monogram at the corners of the covers, ribbed spine decorated in the same manner, internal tooth (CAPÉ).
GAY III, 119. WILLEMS 1921. LEVER 263. One of the two counterfeits published in Holland in the year of the original edition. Attribution remains uncertain. ‘In a thesis defended in 1970, Mr Nicolas Lens suggests that the author of these Memoirs was Pierre-Daniel Huet, Bishop of Avranches.’ (Lever). This novel, set within the Jewish community of Amsterdam, centres on the love story of a young Jewish girl who converts to Christianity to marry a young cadet from the Lusignan family. The author appears to be well-informed and has no doubt read Richard Simon’s work published in 1674: *Ceremonies and Customs Observed Today Among the Jews*.
