AUBIGNAC, François Hédelin d’ – Zenobie. A tragedy. In which the truth of history is preserved whilst adhering to the strictest rules of dramatic poetry. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1647. In-4, (4) ff., 142 pp., paper slightly yellowed, brown grained calfskin binding, plain decorated spine, title running lengthwise. First edition, written in prose. It was composed at the request of Cardinal Richelieu. The author is best known for *La Pratique du Théâtre* (1657), the theories of which the play adheres to. It depicts the tragic fate of the heroic Queen of Palmyra (c. 266–272). Defeated by Emperor Aurelian, despite his regard for her, she ultimately took her own life. (Bound together with the following work by the same author:) *Le Martyre de Ste Catherine*. Tragedy. Based on the copy printed in Caen by Eleazar Mangeant (Paris), 1650. (1) f., 122 pp., yellowed paper, foxing. Second edition (the first was published in Caen, 1649).
