Description
COTOLENDI, Charles] – Saint Evremoniana, or a Collection of Various Curious Pieces. With judicious reflections, fine historical anecdotes, and very useful observations by Monsieur de Saint-Evremond. Luxembourg, André Chevalier, 1702. In-12, (8) folios, 304 pages, (14) folios, ivory-coloured vellum; the cover is slightly dusty.
SAUVY (Confiscated Books) 1086 (Paris, Michel Brunet, 1700). Second edition. Apocryphal. These are remarks attributed to Saint-Evremond, a fact of which no one was fooled. An important chapter on the life of Parisians (pp. 263–295): inns, food, bridges, women, second-hand clothes dealers, the language, house rents, merchants, wine, theatres, charlatans, gamblers, footmen, doctors, alchemists, booksellers, cooks, chocolate, coffee, tea, fashion, etc. ‘Wine is reasonably priced when it is at the city gates, but as soon as it enters the city it turns into drinkable gold; a small measure is worth more in Paris than a barrel in the countryside.’ Portraits of Cardinal de Retz and Mazarin. Notes on painting and painters, including Le Brun (pp. 197–211), etc.
