TCH IV, 687. First edition of the first of the three discourses published under this title. The others appeared in the same year, dealing with Wit and Conversation. Chevalier de Méré was the teacher of etiquette to an entire generation. Born in 1607, he became familiar with his favourite subjects through his frequent visits to the salons of the Hôtel de Rambouillet, Madame de Sablé and Madame de Longueville. He was a dear friend of Pascal’s. He reconciled, with rare skill, the refinements of high society with lofty moral aspirations.
