LONGUEVILLE, De – Letters from M. de Longueville, public writer, to Monsieur ****. Published in Amsterdam and available in Paris from booksellers specialising in new releases, and at the Author’s Lodge, 1777–1778. 2 parts in one volume, 8vo, (2) folios, XXIV, 78 pp., strong brown paper, paper slightly yellowed, marbled fawn calf in the author’s style, decorated ribbed spine. The author was a friend of Grimod de la Reynière and left behind another work in which he comments on the works of J. J. Rousseau. He writes on all manner of subjects and provides details of the small world surrounding him at Place Royale. ‘There is only the profession of executioner that I would not wish to practise; my heart, full of love for mankind, hopes that this horrible trade will one day cease to exist in Europe; when human reason has had another two or three centuries, it will be understood that it is possible to put an end to banditry without men taking the life of another man with the sanction of the law.''
