DELISLE DE SALES, J.-B. Isoard – On the Philosophy of Nature, or a Treatise on Morality for the Human Race. 3rd ed. London, 1777. 6 vols. in-8, 6 engraved title pages, 1 portrait by Borel, engraved by Duflos, 1 frontispiece and 12 illustrations by Née and others, porphyry calf, triple gilt thread on the covers, decorated ribbed spine. COHEN 281. An imprisonment at the Châtelet in 1776 following the re-release of the work suddenly brought Delisle de Sales fame. As a protégé of the philosophers, the author was honoured with a flattering endorsement by Helvétius at the head of this third edition. The work itself was not particularly original, yet it perhaps offered the most comprehensive collection of established ideas produced by Enlightenment philosophy. Divided into four parts, it dealt with the origin of the world and the principle of morality, which is self-love; the second part considered man alone and the purpose of his nature, which is pleasure; the third part dealt with man’s relationship with God, the dangers of atheism, superstition and fanaticism; in the fourth, he advocated a universal religion in which a purified form of worship would replace the canonisation of an obscure saint with commemorations of the Edict of Nantes or the rehabilitation of Calas.
