Description
BAUDOUIN DE GUEMADEUC] – *L'Espion dévalisé*. London, 1782. 8vo, VII, 240 pp., fawn-coloured marbled calf from the publisher, plain spine decorated with grotesque motifs, edges slightly rubbed. LACOMBE 241. INED 38. First edition. Falsely attributed to Mirabeau despite Du Roure (Analecta Biblion II, 464), who believes he recognises in it the qualities of the great orator. ‘It is a highly entertaining book, full of anecdotes and details of social customs worth preserving.’ Anecdotes concerning Silhouette, the short-lived Comptroller-General, the Duke of Choiseul, Cugnot’s carriage, and Turgot. Chapter XIII contains an economic utopia. People are permanently freed from economic want thanks to the production of ersatz goods. They will be able to devote themselves to the fulfilment of human nature.
