The work caused a scandal because it featured satirical portraits of Louis XV, the Prince of Conti, the Marshal of Saxe, Maurepas, Argenson, the Cardinal de Tencin, the painter La Tour, Madame de Pompadour, Madame de Boufflers, and many others. Gustave Mouravit’s seal. Autograph note by Mouravit: ‘Edmond de Goncourt, in *La Maison d’un artiste*, wrote of this work: “a sort of unknown La Bruyère of the 18th century.”’
