Description
BOURNEUF, Sieur de] – The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes, his fortunes and misfortunes. Translated into French verse by the Sieur de B***. Paris, Louis Chamhoudry, 1653. In-4, (3) ff., 169 pp., paper slightly yellowed, title page trimmed slightly short at the lower margin with a small loss to the text, handwritten inscriptions, soft vellum endpapers. LOSADA GOYA no. 40. A reworking in burlesque verse of the first part of *La Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes*, long attributed to Hurtado de Mendoza, but which is in fact by an anonymous author. The earliest known edition is that of Alcalá de Henares (1554). Translated into French on several occasions, it would appear that Bourneuf made use of the 1615 edition (translated by Pierre Bonfons), which he simply transposed into verse. His style often becomes coarse and reveals a pronounced taste for crude expressions. In 1657, Bourneuf published another burlesque poem modelled on Quevedo’s *Suenos* (see Losada Goya).
