Description
MONTFLEURY, Antoine Jacob – *L'Escole des Filles*, a comedy. Performed at the Théâtre Royal de l’Hostel de Bourgongne. Paris, N. Pepingué, 1666. In-12, (5) folios, missing the blank first folio, 107 pp.,
SOLEINNE no. 1343. DE BACKER 859. ‘Very rare first edition.’ Montfleury was the son of the famous actor at the Hôtel de Bourgogne. A successful playwright and rival of Molière, he found himself at the centre of the controversy surrounding *L’École des femmes* (1663). His play bears little resemblance to that one. The action takes place in Toledo in the style of Spanish comedies: jealousy, romantic rivalries, a duel scene.
