Description
LE PAYS, René – Amity, Love and Flings. 2nd ed., rev., corr. and expanded. Paris, Charles de Sercy, 1664. In-12, frontispiece, (22) folios, 466 pp., red morocco, medallion in the centre of the covers, ribbed spine, internal dentation, gilt edges. (E. POUGET).
BRUNET III, 990. GAY I, 99. LEVER 41. First edition in 1664. René Le Pays, Sieur de Plessis-Villeneuve, a Precious writer par excellence, was born in Fougères in 1634. His admiration for Voiture, whose style his letters most closely resemble, earned him a scathing epigram from Boileau: ‘Le Pays, to tell the truth, is an amusing buffoon; but I find nothing beautiful in this Voiture’ (Satire III). This collection of 35 letters, which offers us an excellent example of the precious style of the latter half of the century, was a great success (15 editions in ten years). Titon du Tillet tells us ‘that they met with approval in the capital. There were ladies of the highest rank who read them with great pleasure and who enquired of the bookseller what the author was like.”
