Description
CHAPOTON, François – *Le véritable Coriolan*, a tragedy performed by the Royal Troupe. Paris, Toussainct Quinet, 1639. Small 12mo, (7) folios, 152 pp., frontispiece missing, paper slightly yellowed, fawn calfskin, plain spine with decoration. Second edition (the first, 1638, in-4). Dedicated to Cardinal Richelieu, this tragedy was performed at the Hôtel de Bourgogne. It is preceded by laudatory verses by Rotrou, Colletet, Regnault, Beys, Baudoin and Mareschal. Written in competition with Urbain Chevreau’s play performed at the Hôtel du Marais, it is based on Plutarch’s *Lives of the Noble Men*. The life of Coriolanus also inspired Shakespeare (1608) and Alexandre Hardy (between 1623 and 1628).
