DU BROQUART, G. – *La Fille d’Astrée*, or *La Suite des bergeries de Forets*: Containing several stories of our time, presented under pseudonyms, which illustrate the effects of virtue and honourable affection. Paris, Pierre Billaine, 1633. In-8, (6) ff., 929 (1) pp., (1) f., yellowed paper, foxing, wormholes affecting the lower margin of a few ff., with loss of a few letters, ivory vellum with flaps. LEVER 89. The same work as ‘Second Part of La Bellaure Triomphante’ (1633). A Burgundian author whom Papillon (I, 185) does not hesitate to describe as a man of genius. He presents himself as a successor to *L’Astrée* and, like that work, sets his novel in a real-life setting: Pagny, on the banks of the Arar in Burgundy. It is a roman à clef in which Du Broquart has compiled memoirs that his father—‘who had grown old at the court of two or three kings’—had taken pleasure in writing about the memorable events he had witnessed or taken part in. For example, the lengthy tale of Bajamond and Clarimène depicts, under fictitious names, the real-life adventures of Louis of Savoy, mother of Francis I, the Chevalier Duprat, and the Constable of Bourbon (Magendie, p. 251). But Du Broquart does not merely produce a novel of intrigue. He intersperses the narrative with moral and political reflections: – p. 27, he describes the dangers posed by a favourite who is too powerful. – p. 132, he notes that ‘the riches and possessions that truly make me a man of honour cannot be taken from me.’ - on pp. 724–725, he criticises forced marriages, even when imposed by monarchs, and defends natural inclination. - on pp. 297–303, he praises the shepherds of the Pagny region, whose frugal lifestyle ensures the purity of their morals and who have nothing to envy of the nobility—whom wealth corrupts—and whose distant origins also lay in simple huts.
