BONNEFONS, Jean – *Pancharis Io. Bonfonii Arverni*. Lyon, Thomas Soubron, 1593. Small 12mo, 68 pp., 18th-century fawn calf, decorated ribbed spine. INDEX AURELIENSIS IV, 122.125. BALSAMO No. 169. First published in 1587 by Abel L’angelier. A collection of erotic poems in the style of Jean Second’s *Les Baisers*, dedicated to Jacques de La Guesle. The work was reprinted in Tours by Georges Drobet in 1593; this edition by Thomas Soubron is a pirated copy. The author was born in Auvergne around 1554 and practised as a lawyer in Paris under the patronage of Achille de Harlay, who secured his appointment around 1584 as lieutenant-general of the bailiwick of Bar-sur-Seine. *Pancharis*, the fictitious name of a mistress, is a collection of love poems which has earned him a place above all the poets of his century. The result of a literary friendship, Gilles Durant’s ‘Imitations of Jean Bonnefons’ *Pancharis* and other amorous delights of his own composition first appeared together with Jean Bonnefons’s work in 1587, and have remained inseparable in subsequent editions, which attest to their success amongst contemporaries. Both men, fellow Auvergnats, were renowned lawyers. Gilles Durant, born around 1550 in Clermont, was one of the nine jurists chosen to reform the customary law of Paris. He is also known for his contribution to the *Satyre Ménippée* with the famous *Lamentation sur l’Ane Ligueur*. The first part, entitled *Imitations du Latin* by Jean Bonnefons, is a free translation of Bonnefons’s *Pancharis*. It is an anthology of erotic poetry, in which the bawdy humour, combined with a certain tenderness, is not without its charm. The *Gayetés* by Gilles Durant that follow contain songs, sonnets, odes and stanzas, most of which are dedicated to Charlotte, whom he calls his ‘island of chaste rock’, but also to the author’s friends: Cl. Binet, Fr. Miron, J. Bonnefons and Fr. Grelière de Macefer.
