MAZARINADES] - . . , approx. 58 leaflets, bound in a slipcase or with a paper cover. A circular letter sent by the King to all the governors of the Kingdom of France (sic). Paris, 1649, 8 pages. MOREAU 1827. Dated at Saint-Germain on 30 September 1647 (48), and countersigned by Phelippeaux. An account of everything that has taken place since the unrest of 26 August 1648 up to the Parliament’s conferences with the princes at Saint-Germain. - A letter of reproach from the Queen to Cardinal Mazarin expressing her regret at having loved him. (S. 1.), 1649, 6 pages. MOREAU 2051. This letter seems to promise scandal; and it would be quite innocent, were it not for its senseless vehemence. It has been reprinted under the title ‘Letter from the Queen to Cardinal Mazarin, etc.’ - Letter from Cardinal Mazarin to His Serene Highness Archduke Leopold, together with that from M. de La Tour, Governor of Arras, to His Grace the Prince of Conty. Paris, 1649, 4 pages. MOREAU 2095. Dated 14 and 17 January. Forged and fabricated (Mascurat, p. 15). - A true account of the most significant events that took place in the Parliament of Paris, and of the measures taken on its orders in the service of the King since the abduction of His Majesty, drawn up on 6 January 1649. There is another edition, very poorly printed and comprising only 4 pages, and yet another of 4 pages in-12, s. 1. n.d. - Remonstrance by the Three Estates to the Queen Regent for peace. Paris, Jean Brunet, 1649, 24 pages. MOREAU 3312. Signed D. B. The document is divided into three parts, each with a sub-title; one for each estate: the clergy, the nobility and the people. It is particularly remarkable for its style; however, it contains neither facts nor anecdotes. See *Le Conseiller fidèle*. - Petition by the Three Estates, presented to the Members of Parliament. (S. 1., 1648), 8 pages. MOREAU 3494. The text indicates that there are several editions of a pamphlet-style petition, of which the 1648 edition is the rarest. This work has elicited conflicting judgements: some, such as Naudé, hold it in high regard, whilst others, such as Mailly, strongly condemn it for its attacks on Cardinal Mazarin. He also notes that the printer was punished for publishing it, evidence of the text’s polemical nature. Finally, the petition, attributed to the Estates of Île-de-France but speaking on behalf of other provinces, was even translated into Dutch, which demonstrates its wide circulation. - The Resolution of the Good Frenchmen, to the King and the Queen. Paris, the widow of Théodore Pépingué and Estienne Maucroy, 1649, 7 pages. One of the earliest documents of the Fronde, and not among the most common. MOREAU 3511. - The Satyr, or Mazarin Metamorphosed. Paris, François Noël, 1649. MOREAU 3596. Two parts, each comprising 7 pages. The second part, entitled: ‘Second Part of the Satyr, or Mazarin Metamorphosed, in burlesque verse’, was published by Sébastien Martin. - Moral and Christian Maxims for the Peace of Conscience in Current Affairs, to Serve as Instruction to Parish Priests, Confessors and Preachers, Compiled and Sent from Saint-Germain-en-Laye by a Theologian, a Loyal Officer of the King, to the Members of Parliament. Paris, Cardin Besongne, 1649. MOREAU 2427. The text is an important pamphlet from the Fronde period which sets out political and religious principles concerning royal authority and the duties of subjects, whilst acknowledging certain limits to power. It strongly criticises Mazarin and calls for his removal, which has given rise to conflicting views on the work. Despite various theories, the author’s identity remains uncertain, but the work is considered influential. - Mazarin’s Supplication to the Parisians, asking for their forgiveness, sent from Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Paris, Claude Boudeville, 1649, 8 pages. MOREAU 3731. - *The Crushed Tarantella*, or *The Imprecation of the Impious Mazarin*. Rouen, 1649, 7 pages. MOREAU 3750. Poor verse, but the most violent I have ever come across. - The Betrayals Uncovered, or The People Sold Out. (n.p., 1649), 7 pages. MOREAU 3794. The text describes a highly inflammatory pamphlet dating from the period of Ruel’s lectures, attacking Parliament, the Queen and several leading political figures. In it, the author hurls threats and insults at various figures from the aristocracy and the ruling classes. It also mentions another, more extensive edition of the pamphlet, dated 1649, which adds verses and a satirical song targeting several princes and military figures, in an even more derisive and accusatory tone. - An Important Discourse on the Government of this Kingdom, dedicated to the Queen Regent. Paris, Veuve Musnier, 1649, 14 pages. MOREAU 1126. Some details of some interest concerning the forms of government. - Dialogue between Rome and Paris concerning Mazarin. (S. 1.), 1649, 20 pages. MOREAU 1083. After the peace; for Paris says: ‘I shall harbour him within me, if he wishes to return.’ The author draws a parallel between Richelieu and Mazarin; and amongst his reasons for preferring the former, he is sure to include this one: that Richelieu was a gentleman. He speaks of a pamphlet against Concini, *Les Faits du marquis d’Ancre*. It was, he says, a sheet of white paper, folded into quarters, which was sold under the counter. He adds that one could do the same with Mazarin. - *Coq à l’asne* or *A Burlesque Letter from the Revived Sieur Voiture to the Valiant Knight Guichens, alias Mares. Chal de Gramont, on the Affairs and News of the Day*. Paris, published by the author’s widow and heiress, Rue Bon-Conseil, under the sign of ‘Le Bout du Monde’, 1649, 8 pages. MOREAU 797. *Le Coq à l’asne* is one of the wittiest plays of the Fronde. It was reprinted in 1649 under the title: *Letter from an Unknown Man*, etc.
