MAGNE no. 159. DE BACKER no. 728. This comedy, adapted from a Spanish work but retaining all the author’s personal originality, was a great success and brought the ‘Jodelet’ genre into vogue. Scarron borrowed the subject from a Spanish play by Fernando de Rojas entitled *Don Juan Alvaredo*.
