DENIS, Jean Baptiste] – Anecdotal Memoirs of the Court and Clergy of France, including the History of the Dispute between Cardinal de Noailles and the Bishops of Luçon and La Rochelle, and the Jesuits. London, 1712. In-12, frontispiece, (7) folios, 291 (5) pages, fold-out map (ecclesiastical map of the Kingdom of France), 4 full-length portraits of Clement XI, Bossuet, Madame de Maintenon and Jansenius, yellowed paper, brown grained calfskin, decorated ribbed spine. SHF 3104. Raised by a Catholic priest, he later became a Jesuit and then an Oratorian; in 1704 he served as secretary to Bissy, Bossuet’s successor as Bishop of Meaux, and converted to Protestantism in 1706. The clergy of France are entirely dependent on the court; its members lead dissolute lives and squander their wealth; disorder and confusion reign within this order. Denis attacks the government, which, to the detriment of the nobility, is entrusted to an ‘infinite number of favourites, even of the lowest birth’. He spares no one, for example Madame de Maintenon, Noailles, Bissy and, above all, Bossuet: it is in his writings that we find the account of Bossuet’s marriage to Mademoiselle des Vieux de Mauléon, which Voltaire was quick to use and embellish.
