DU VERDIER, Gilbert Saulnier – *La Sibile de Perse*. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1632. In-8, (1) fol., 515 pp., (1) fol., 20 ff. unnumbered between pp. 414 and 415, paper slightly yellowed, the 7 introductory folios are missing, green half-morocco with corner pieces, decorated ribbed spine, gilt head. (A minor successor to SIMIER). ARBOUR 14554. LEVER 391. First edition. An adventure novel partly inspired by *Amadis* and chivalric romances. It occasionally draws on the fantastical: ''In du Verdier’s *La Sibile de Perse*, the Sibyl leads a character from the island of Axent (?) to Sainte-Baume, along a path that passes beneath the seas and continents. On this journey, the two travellers see the single source from which all rivers flow.’’ (Magendie, p. 38). – ‘The shield of Sphéramond of Greece had the power to render invisible anyone who wore it upside down.’ (op. cit., 176).
