THÉVENEAU DE MORANDE, Charles] – *Le Gazetier cuirassé: or scandalous anecdotes from the French Court*. Printed one hundred leagues from the Bastille at the ‘Sign of Liberty’ (London), 1785. Small 8vo, frontispiece, 180, 58 pp. (Historical Remarks & Anecdotes on the Château de la Bastille & the Inquisition in France), (1) f., fold-out plan of the Bastille, ivory vellum with flaps, title in calligraphy in red and black, slightly rubbed. DRUJON I, 387 (1771). A highly scathing, abusive and often defamatory pamphlet, directed against the leading figures of the French Court, notably Madame Du Barry, the Count of Saint-Florentin and Chancellor Maupeou. (Bound together with:) [IMBERT, Guillaume] – *La Chronique scandaleuse ou Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des moeurs de la génération présente*. Paris, in a corner where one sees everything, 1784. (2) ff., 227 pp. This curious chronicle (1st ed. 1783) is, as is well known, the work of Guillaume Imbert and a few of his friends. The work is full of initialisms that are fairly easy to decipher. Drujon (I, 196) describes two curious plays: the first, entitled ‘Ligurie, a tale translated from the Greek’, whose characters are: Ligurie, Mademoiselle Forestier, a pretty fashion merchant, aged 14 to 15, who went on to make a name for herself; Leucosie, one of her close friends and her confidante; the Duke D...., the Duke of Aumont, her lover; and finally Biblis, Madame Dubuisson, the matchmaker, the most skilful pupil of the famous Gourdan. The second play, much longer, is entitled: “An Abridged History of Psaltérion, the famous Arab critic, translated from the Turkish by D. L. H.”. It is a scathing satire directed at La Harpe.
