BELLORI, Giovanni Pietro – Images of illustrious ancient philosophers, poets, rhetoricians and orators, taken from ancient coins, gems, herms, marble sculptures and other ancient monuments. Rome, De Rubeis (chalcography), 1739. 3 parts in one folio volume, (3) folios, 20, 16, 15 pp., 3 engraved title pages, frontispiece and 95 plates, full-size, engraved by Jacques Blondeau, Jean Collin and Benoît Thiboust; brown half-calf, smooth spine with slightly faded decoration, headbands and upper edge partially restored. BRUNET I, 759. CICOGNARA 2765. Second edition. It reproduces the first edition of 1685. Bellori (Rome 1613–1696) was an archaeologist, art critic and art historian, and a member of the Academy of Saint Luke. His work is confined to heroes of the mind, excluding all those who made a name for themselves through violence or military exploits. The 95 plates depict coins, engraved stones, stelae and sculptures, each of which is located at: the Queen Christina Museum, Fulvio Orsini, Cardinal Farnese, Leonardo Agostini, Cardinal Francesco Barberini, the Borghese Gardens, Achille Maffei, Felice Rondanini, Fabrizio Massimo, etc.
