LA PLACE, Pierre Antoine de] – Interesting and Little-Known Documents for the History. Brussels (Paris, Prault), 1781. In-12, VIII, 430 pp., brown grained calfskin, slightly later, plain decorated spine, a few scuffs. Volume I alone of seven published up to 1790. SGARD 223. La Place (1707–1793), a journalist who edited *Le Mercure* (1760) and founded France’s first daily newspaper, *Le Journal de Paris*, introduced Shakespeare’s works to France (*Théâtre anglais*, 1745–1749). *Les Pièces intéressantes* is a collection of historical and literary anecdotes in which the author’s sympathies shine through: Voltaire, whom he described as his mentor, Crébillon, Piron and Duclos are frequently cited. They reflect La Place’s Protestant origins and his hatred of Jesuit proselytism (he was forced to attend the College of Saint-Omer). Contains: Letters from J. B. Rousseau.
