TITE-LIVE – The Speeches and Orations, Newly Translated into French by I. de Hamelin. Paris, Vascosan, 1567. In-8, (5) leaves, 314 leaves, (8) leaves, burgundy half-leather, ribbed spine (PAGNANT). A translation dedicated to King Henry II, first published by Vascosan in 1556, by Jean de Amelin de Sarlat, a gentleman in the service of Marshal Armand de Biron, whom he refers to as his ‘Patron’. Celebrated by Ronsard in the Second Book of the Mélanges (1559): ‘For among historians, none of the ancients // Nor any of the moderns, can match the honour of the Roman Titus Livius // Who (alas!) nevertheless lay in obscurity, // And was read only by the Latin peoples. // Now the French shall have his fine work, // Faithfully translated into their own language, // By the learned Amelin, who had previously, // In a hundred ways demonstrated how learned he is.”
