Description
ARGENS, Marquis of – Memoirs. With some letters on various subjects. London (France?), Published by the Company, 1735. In-12, (2) ff. 312 pp., brown grained calf, spine with raised bands and decoration.
A counterfeit of the edition published by Conlon (III, 35250) in 296 pp. The Memoirs, written with the utmost truthfulness, recount the author’s youth. Later, the Marquis d’Argens bitterly regretted having published them. “Of all my works,” he said, “the one I most regret having published is my Memoirs. And although they were written with the utmost truthfulness, and though they enjoyed some success, it was one of the greatest follies I have ever committed in my life to have written such a book in my youth...” One of the Marquis d’Argens’s most highly regarded literary works, brimming with comical adventures, witty remarks and humour, interwoven with reflections on the fine arts and on love, all of which have never ceased to hold the epicurean’s interest to the very highest degree.
