BRILLON, Pierre-Jacques] – A Defence of Monsieur de La Bruyère, or A Reply to the Criticism of Theophrastus’s *Characters*. Paris: J.-B. Delespine, 1701. In-12, (4) folios, 484 pp., (6) ff., red morocco plate, triple gold thread on the covers, decorated ribbed spine, gilt edges (E. POUGET). ROCHEBILIÈRE 660. First edition. Brillon (1631–1710), Intendant-General to the Duke of Maine, had been an acquaintance of La Bruyère and remains an important source for the history of *The Characters*, particularly for what he reveals about La Bruyère’s literary methods (the creation of portraits based on real-life figures). Comprising twenty-three letters, each examines a chapter of *Les Caractères*, in response to *Les Sentiments critiques* by Vigneul-Marville (Bonaventure d’Argonne), concerning La Bruyère. This is Brillon’s fifth and final work devoted to La Bruyère.
