FITELIEU, M. de, Sieur de Rodolphe & du Montour – *La Contre-mode*. Paris, Louis de Heuqueville, 1642. In-12, (8) folios, 406 pages, (1) folio, bound copy, a few small pale stains, paper slightly yellowed, midnight blue morocco binding as per the edition, triple thread stitching. gilded on the covers, decorated ribbed spine, gilded edges, one corner slightly misshapen. BRUNET II, 1274. First edition. Paul Lacroix (Bulletin du Bibliophile 1860, p. 1581) had already noted the rarity of this volume, which is ‘highly interesting for the history of French costume and customs’. It forms a counterpart to Grenailles’s work (1642), *La Mode*. He regarded Grenailles as “one of the finest writers of our time”. Here are the main chapters of Fitelieu’s book: “Fashion; the fashionable head; the fashionable eyes; the fashionable mouth; the fashionable ears; the fashionable hands; the fashionable feet; conversion to fashion; fashionable religion; fashionable gods—the fashionable gods are the World, Riches, Grandeur, Love, Fortune and the Hour (which deals with superstitions and various means of foretelling the future); the fashionable body; the fashionable mind.” From this jumble of biblical and historical quotations, one could extract a valuable collection of documents on the fashions of the reign of Louis XIII.
